It’s Time to Turn that Garbage into Glam

Applications now being accepted for innovative new Trash ‘n’ Fashion Competition

Spearheaded by Karen Murphy, School of Speech, Drama & Communications, in association with the Northwest Garden Show 2012 and sponsored by Ferry’s Refuse, this new and innovative competition is calling all second level students to get their recycle, reuse & re-thinking caps on to turn old trash into wearable art.

Students are invited to develop their own theme to create a fashion masterpiece made solely from recyclable materials. Entries will then go head to head on the Trash ‘n’ Fashion catwalk for a live three part competition involving two semi-finals and final at the North West Garden Show Saturday 26th of May. Joining the judging panel is Karen O’Kane, Koko Designs and Michelle McCarroll, Michi Designs

The aim of “Trash n Fashion” is to increase awareness of recycling issues through a Secondary School creative Art competition. All creations must be made from recyclable materials ONLY and competitors must provide a brief overview of their creation detailing the materials used. The winning team will receive a prize fund of €1,000 for their school.

“Recycling should be a cornerstone of a households weekly priorities. We have seen household waste bills reduced significantly for our customers who embrace recycling. Trash ‘n’ Fashion is a wonderful initiative that encourages young people to appreciate the importance of recycling and we are delighted to be on board as main sponsors,” says Jim Ferry, Managing Director of Ferry’s Refuse.

“Fashion students tend to agree that looking good doesn’t have to cost a packet! This competition which we have introduced this year will help the public to think of consumption and waste in a different way. It will give students an opportunity to educate their fellow classmates about recycling without preaching – so our idea is to produce a ‘Trashion Show’ using recycled material to create funky fashion” ” says Karen Murphy, competition organiser.

“The competition will challenge student’s creativity, boost confidence and self esteem and in terms of a personal gain, they will have developed a substantial piece for their Art Portfolio especially if they plan to pursue a career in Art & Design. Participating will enhance their academic experience, develop skills for use in present & future careers, provide an opportunity to meet new people and network and improve team building critical thinking and communications skills, which will stand them well for learning for life”.

Exhibits to be staged on the Trash ‘n’ Fashion Catwalk in the 10,000 sq. ft. Indoor Exhibition Arena at the Northwest Garden Show on Saturday 26th May. This also offers students a great opportunity to showcase their creations to an anticipated audience of over 16,000 people attending the Northwest’s biggest gardening and outdoor event.

No entry fee is required. All entry forms to be returned via post or email by Friday, 27th April 2012 to: Karen Murphy School of Speech Drama & Communications, Ballylawn, Manorcunningham,
Co. Donegal.

Monday Mash Up: It’s Time to go Retro Running!

After two months of planning, last week saw the launch of Ireland’s first retro run in Eyre Square in the heart of Galway City.

Challenged by our client Smartsearch.ie to come up with a novel Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign for 2012, we developed the idea to host Ireland’s first competitive backwards run and walk over a 1km distance.

The event takes place in South Park, Salthill on Sunday 10th June and we have enrolled the support of current World and UKChampion Retro Runner Garret Doherty who is orginally from Donegal but who now lives in Dublin.

We will also try and break a Guinness World Record by having more than 539 people take part – the current record was set in Belgium in 2009.  And all proceeds from the event will go to Western Alzheimers.

So we are now calling on all challenge-hunters to sign up now and be part of Ireland’s most novel world record attempt this year.

Sign up by logging onto Smartsearch.ie and get your friends involved!

Of course the entire Media Box team will be retro running and our training starts today!

Until next week, keep running in heels (backwards)!

“Don’t Be Backwards at Coming Forwards!”

Smartsearch.ie Need 600 People for Ireland’s First Retro Run in aid of Western Alzheimers

Galway-based company Smartsearch.ie launched one of the most novel Guinness World Record attempts yesterday, (Wednesday 11th April) in Eyre Square.

Ireland’s first Retro Run will take place in South Park, Salthill on Sunday 10th of June with World Champion Garret Doherty expected to lead the field.

For anyone who doesn’t know what Retro Running is, says Smartsearch.ie Managing Director Michael Keaney, “it’s quite simply running backwards. We have engaged the World Retro Running Champion, over a 3k distance, Garret Doherty, to help all our entrants with their training and technique.

“Raising much-needed funds for Western Alzheimers, we believe this event will be one of the most memorable fun events in Galway this year. Not content with organising Ireland’s first competitive Retro Run, we also want to break a Guinness World Record, so I am calling on young and old to take up the challenge. It will be completed over a distance of 1km so people of all fitness levels will be able to run or walk it.”

Mayor of Galway Hildegarde Naughton was the first person to try retro running and took on World Champion Garret Doherty in a short race in Eyre Square. Launching the event Mayor Naughton called on everyone to get involved. “This is indeed one of the most novel events to take place in Galway this year and all in aid of a very worthy cause. I would encourage the people of Galway to come on board to help break the Guinness world record while raising money for, and awareness of, for Western Alzheimers.”

The current Guinness World Record for Retro Running is 539 and it was set in Belgium in 2009. Smartsearch.ie is hoping to get 600 people taking part in their retro run event over a short distance of just 1km.

Noel Higgins, Area Manager and Fundraising Officer for Western Alzheimers says, “when we were approached by Michael with this novel fundraising idea, we were immediately enthused and very excited to be involved. We are currently in the process of fundraising for a Residential Unit in Merlin Park which is very much needed given the growing number of Alzheimers and Dementia cases in Ireland and in the West.

Garret Doherty originally from Donegal, but who now lives in Dublin, has been retro running for three years. His introduction to the sport arose from a moment of spontaneity a couple of years ago. While taking his usual jog in Fairview Park, Garret decided to “turn to face the heat of the sun and thus began to run backwards. Then I saw the other people in the park were really intrigued by it.” He embraces this part of the experience and says, “humans love to stare, so I give them something to stare at.”

This unusual form of exercise originates from China. For thousands of years, the Chinese have been walking and running backwards. It’s a common enough sight even now, to see an elderly person taking a light jog in reverse around a park in Shanghai.

Very quickly after making his turn, Garret noticed a significant difference in his health and fitness. He says, “the sport cures all forward running injuries, because it builds up the muscles around the shins and knees. It also creates great forward running momentum as it keeps you on your toes.”

As well as the associated physical benefits, Garret also believes running in reverse leads to an increased mental capacity. He says, “It will increase your vision, awareness, co-ordination and balance. Similar to blind people, you start using the same set of senses.”

Scientists have long studied the vast differences between the methodical left hand side of the brain versus the more creative and independent right hand side. Garret says that by running in reverse “its a neurobic activity that incorporates use of the under used right side of the brain. It helps you to start thinking for yourself.” He uses Einstein as an example of someone who “was left handed and used the right hand side of his brain, but failed at school.”

To register for Ireland’s first Retro Run log onto Smartsearch.ie. The entrance fee is €25 with the first 600 entrants receiving a Retro Running t-shirt and a €25 voucher for Smartsearch.ie. All entrants will receive a certificate on completion of the run/walk. Sponsorship cards to help raise vital funds for Western Alzheimers are available to download from Smartsearch.ie. For more information on the event contact info@smartsearch.ie or joanne@mediabox.ie.

One4All and An Post Announced as Title Sponsors

Pictured launching the partnership between One4All and An Post with the 2012 Irish Cycling Show are: Hugh Bonner, CEO Mara Media, Show Promoter; Aoife Davey; Marketing Manager One4All representing An Post and Michael Dawson, CEO One4All.

The organisers of the Irish Cycling Show are delighted to announce that One4All and An Post will be joint title sponsors of the inaugural event at the RDS on May 19th and 20th.

The Irish Cycling Show will provide a showcase for an industry that has grown exponentially in recent years in marked contrast to many other aspects of the economy.

One4All and An Post have both been very active in promoting the health, tourism and leisure benefits of an activity that now boasts over one million bicycle owners in Ireland.

Michael Dawson of One4All is looking forward to the opportunity to promote One4All’s various activities in cycling including promotion of the Cycle4Haiti charity cycle and a thriving business in bike purchase vouchers for the Cycle to Work scheme.

“We’re delighted to be co sponsors of the inaugural Irish Cycling Show which I think it’s going to be something very special,” says Dawson.

“Cycling has become a mega business in Ireland with new shops opening every month and increase in sales by several hundred percent over the last number of years so there’s a big boom and a big race for people to get into cycling.

“For One4All it was an ideal opportunity to both help promote cycling in general, to obviously encourage our own business along and also to promote our involvement in the Cycle4Haiti charity bike ride.

“This is the third year that we’ve organised this event and we’re hoping that by our involvement in the Irish Cycling Show that it will give an opportunity to show more people exactly what we do and how this annual Cycle 4 Haiti is a great fun event for people to get involved in.

In confirming An Post’s sponsorship of the show, company CEO Donal Connell is looking forward to welcoming more than 10,000 visitors to the Simmonscourt Pavilion of the RDS in Dublin on May 19th and 20th.

“An Post is the leading sponsor of Irish cycling, from grass-roots to elite level,” says Connell. “We are looking forward to Ireland’s first cycling show. It is a great opportunity for Irish business and we encourage retailers to get involved.

“It will also make a great family day out, with plenty to see and do, whether people are just getting into cycling or treat the sport as a serious challenge. We will be at the RDS on May 19th/20th to promote the An Post Cycle Series and to celebrate the start of An Post Rás.”

Irish Cycling Show promoter Hugh Bonner of Mara Media says that the promotional partnership One4All and An Post demonstrates the valuable gap in the market that show fills.

“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome An Post and One4All on board in the promotion of the Irish Cycling Show.

“Both An Post and One4All have made huge contributions to Irish cycling in the last few years and it’s a very positive affirmation of the work that we’re doing that two such prestigious brands have chosen to be associated with the event.

We’re looking forward to working with them to make May 19th and 20th the biggest weekend in the Irish cycling calendar.”
